  2. Announcing Slackware Linux 7.1!
  3.  
  4. The first major release for 2000, Slackware Linux 7.1 builds on the
  5. success of Slackware 7.0.  In addition to program updates and distribution
  6. enhancements, you'll find the Konfucius (1.90) and the Kleopatra (1.91)
  7. developmental releases of the K Desktop Environment, XFree86 4.0,
  8. OpenMotif 2.1.30, and TrollTech's Qt 2.1.1 library available as system
  9. add-ons.  Various hardware improvements have been made, including support
  10. for ATA/66 hard disks and controllers and support for the Creative Labs
  11. SB Live! cards.  The distribution improvements, software updates, and
  12. additional hardware support included make Slackware 7.1 a very nice upgrade 
  13. for users of Slackware 7.0.

  15. From the beginning, Slackware has offered a stable and secure Linux 
  16. distribution for UNIX veterans as well as an easy-to-use system for
  17. beginners.  Slackware includes everything you'll need to run a powerful
  18. server or workstation.  Each Slackware package follows the setup and
  19. installation instructions from its author(s), offering you the most stable
  20. and easily expandable setup.

  22. Here are some of the advanced features of Slackware 7.1:
  23.  
  24. - Runs the 2.2.16 version of the Linux kernel from ftp.kernel.org
  25.      - Special kernels were prepared for ATA/66 support and for ZipSlack;
  26.        the patches can be found in the source/kernel-source/ tree.
  27.      - Alan Cox's 2.2.16 errata patch was used to build the kernels.  The
  28.        patch can also be found in the source/kernel-source/ tree.

  30. - Generic IDE (bare.i) and SCSI (scsi.s) boot images work with nearly
  31.      all Intel-based (and compatible) computer systems.  Additional
  32.      precompiled kernels (60 varieties in all) and boot images provide
  33.      specialized support for hardware such as Adaptec SCSI controllers, 
  34.      parallel-port IDE devices, IBM PS/2 machines with the Microchannel bus, 
  35.      SGI Visual Workstations, Symmetrical Multiprocessing machines, ATA/66 
  36.      controller and disk support, and much much more.

  38. - System binaries linked with the GNU C Library, version 2.1.3 (glibc-2.1.3)
  39.  
  40. - Includes libc 5.4.46 shared libraries for backwards compatibility with
  41.   previous releases.

  44.      - XFree86 4.0 is available in the /contrib directory for those users
  45.        wishing to use that release.

  47. - GhostScript and APS-filter are included to support many common PC printers.

  51. - Installs egcs-1.1.2 as the default C, C++, and Objective C compiler.

  54. - Apache 1.3.12 web server with Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) support 
  55.   pre-configured to run right out of the box.

  89.      - install.iso:  Bootable install disc containing everything except
  90.                      source, /contrib, and BigSlack
  91.      - source.iso:   The complete source code tree for Slackware Linux.
  92.      - contrib.iso:  The /contrib tree which contains a lot of prebuilt
  93.                      Slackware packages and their source.

  95. - Installs to a native Linux (ext2fs) partition for maximum performance, or
  96.      into a \LINUX directory on an existing Windows FAT/FAT32 partition using
  97.      the Linux UMSDOS filesystem.  With UMSDOS, you can install a complete 
  98.      Linux system without repartitioning your hard drive!

  100. - Another Slackware exclusive:  Slackware's ZipSlack installation option is
  101.      the fastest, _easiest_ Linux installation ever.  ZipSlack provides a 
  102.      full-featured text-based Linux system as a 36 megabyte ZIP archive.  
  103.      Simply unzip on any FAT or FAT32 partition, edit your boot partition in
  104.      the LINUX.BAT batch file, and you can be running Linux in less than five
  105.      minutes.  The ZipSlack installation includes everything you need to
  106.      network with Linux (including Ethernet, token ring, SLIP and PPP), 
  107.      develop Linux applications with C, C++, and Perl, and extend the system
  108.      with additional software packages such as X.  A ZipSlack system will 
  109.      even fit on a Zip(TM) disk, so you can carry a personal Linux system
  110.      with you to run on any PC with a Zip(TM) drive.

  112. - BigSlack is a version of ZipSlack that offers a complete Slackware Linux
  113.      setup, including a fully configured GNOME 1.2 installation.  BigSlack
